Stepping Stones of NJ

Stepping Stones of NJ is a monthly collaboration with Tertium Quid, Bergen LGBTQ Center, and PFLAG Paramus. It is a safe space for parents to meet with a peer facilitator for support, learning, and encouragement on their journey parenting a transgender and/or gender-diverse child. A gender specialist is also on-site to answer any questions or concerns that might arise.

Children meet separately with Diana, our youth worker for arts/crafts, sports, and/or other community-building experiences with friends who have a shared lived experience. Youth of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Stepping Stones meets on the first Sunday of the month in various locations around Montclair, NJ. Please see the Special Events page on this website for more information and to register. Registration is required.

Equity) is a compassionate group therapy program that meets in person on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. This group is specially designed to cater to the needs of LGBTQ adults navigating the multifaceted experiences of mental health and substance use challenges. In this safe and understanding environment, participants will connect with a supportive community of individuals with shared lived experiences on the path to healing and holistic well-being.

Smart Recovery

Smart Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a secular, science-based support program for individuals seeking relief from addictive behaviors. The program uses a four-point approach:

  1. Building and Maintaining Motivation: Helps individuals understand and keep up their motivation in recovery.

  2. Coping with Urges: Teaches skills for managing urges and cravings.

  3. Managing Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors: Aims to enhance self-awareness and develop healthy ways of dealing with emotions and behaviors.

  4. Living a Balanced Life: Focuses on lifestyle balance and strategies to maintain overall well-being.

Smart Recovery is based on evidence-based therapeutic methods. It provides tools and techniques for self-directed change, and this particular group is lead by a trained SMART volunteer and licensed mental health professional - Kyle Boomhower, LAC. The program stands out because it's recognized for its scientific foundation, and it emphasizes self-empowerment and self-reliance in recovery.
